If you are looking for a tour rich in history, photography, and nature, Boca de Yuma is the perfect choice. Yuma was the first Spanish coastal outpost in the eastern part of the island and was originally a Taíno community.

The day begins with a visit to the barrio and local school, along with stops for cigars, chocolate, and rum, as outlined in the Munchies in Macao tour.

From there, we head into the countryside on our journey to Boca de Yuma. Along the way, we will talk about the topography, geography, and history of the region as we pass through rugged scrubland, marginal farmland, and cane fields. Rural life here is simple and often challenging, but it also shows the resilience and creativity of the people who live it every day.

Once we arrive in Boca de Yuma, our first stop is lunch and it may well be the best meal you have during your stay. Set on a coral cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the restaurant serves fresh, made-to-order seafood, pasta, pizza, and more. Please note that lunch is extra and cash only.

During lunch, you may also have the chance, conditions permitting, to swim in a local cenote filled with Caribbean saltwater. If the cenote is too much for you, or conditions are rough, the restaurant also has a saltwater swimming pool where you can cool off.

Boca de Yuma is rich in history, and we take time to explore what others left behind hundreds and even thousands of years ago, from the Taíno era through the 17th and 18th centuries. A visit to a local cave gives us the chance to see the artwork of the island’s early inhabitants and experience one of the area’s most geologically fascinating sites.

The Yuma River has long been a safe haven for sailors of every kind. Here we board a small boat and travel both up and down the river, taking in the natural beauty along with traces of the past and present. If water conditions allow, we may also take a short ride out to sea.

This tour is especially recommended for guests who enjoy history, photography, and nature.

Please note that I do not recommend this tour for children under 5 years old or for anyone with mobility, heart, or breathing issues, as there are some steep climbs and uneven surfaces. Proper footwear is required.

Please note: the school operates Sept through June, though classes may pause during holiday periods.

Tours run Monday through Friday and are always subject to availability at the time of booking.

  • Pick-up and drop-off at your location
